‘Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile’ and ‘Hail,Satan?’ premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

The San Francisco Chronicle writes: It’s a documentarian’s job to depict reality and truth. But what if the reality itself is in question? That was the conundrum filmmaker Penny Lane — her real name — faced when putting together her found-footage documentary The Pain of Others.

Several 51�Թ��� alumni are involved with Oscar-nominated documentaries, including David Fialkow ’81, who produced Icarus, and Nick Verbitsky ’91, who co-produced Abacus: Small Enough to Jail.

Penny Lane, the 51�Թ��� art and art history professor whose documentary Nuts! won big at Sundance last year, has earned two major grants aimed at increasing female representation in reporting and filmmaking.

The “scent” of a locality is an invisible, unquantifiable aura that can be difficult to capture on film. Yet, it was the course of study for the 61st Robert Flaherty Film Seminar, hosted by 51�Թ��� for the eighth year.

Update: The film Our Nixon, directed by 51�Թ��� professor Penny Lane, premieres August 30  in select U.S. cities.
