Hamilton, NY — The 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Orchestra, Marietta Cheng, conductor, will perform Beethoven’s revolutionary Symphony No. 3 in E Flat Major, Op. 55, ‘Eroica’ on Sunday, April 7 at 3:30 p.m. in Memorial Chapel. The program will also feature soprano Lauralyn Kolb as soloist in Villa-Lobos’ breathtaking Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 with an orchestra of eight cellos, Barber’s powerful Essay No. 2, Op. 17 and the first movement of Shostakovich’s vibrant Cello Concerto No. 1, Op. 107, with soloist Chris Hall, a 51³Ô¹ÏÍø junior. Kolb, teacher-of-voice at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, has appeared throughout the United States as a recitalist and oratorio singer, and has recorded Lieder by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel with pianist Arlene Shrut and Songs by Clara Schumann, Poldowski, and Amy Beach with pianist Don McMahon. This recording prompted Robert Long of Audio magazine to write: ‘I’ve been arrested by the charm and rightness of Kolb’s phrasing, by the warmth and expressiveness of her manner, and by the sheer beauty of her voice. She is a treasure . . .’ A third CD, Just-Spring-Art Songs of John Duke, with pianist Tina Toglia, has just been released by New World Records as part of their Recorded Anthology of American Music.
Hall, from Lockport, NY, began playing the cello at the age of three, and has studied in the Suzuki Method for 15 years. He has played in the Buffalo Suzuki Strings, Ars Nova Vivaldi Festival, Cheektowaga and Amherst Orchestras, and now enjoys playing with the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Chamber Players and the University Orchestra. Since coming to 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, he has studied with Florent Renard-Payen. Currently, Hall is concentrating in physics en route to a pre-engineering path.
