gingrich.jpgNewt Gingrich, former speaker of the House of Representatives, will deliver a lecture at 7:30 p.m. March 26 in Memorial Chapel.

During his talk, “President Obama & the Future of the American Freedom,” Gingrich will assess Obama’s policies and administration and discuss the future of the Republican Party.

Gingrich’s lecture, sponsored by the university’s Center for Freedom and Western Civilization and the College Republicans, is free and open to the public.

“Gingrich is one of the most influential ‘ideas men’ of our time,” said Robert Kraynak, political science professor and director of the Center for Freedom and Western Civilization. “The campus community will find the depth of his talk to be intellectually stimulating.”

John Lyon ’11, College Republicans president and one of the event organizers, said, “Regardless of whether or not you agree with Gingrich’s ideas, his lecture will provide inspiration and excitement.”

Gingrich, who spent 20 years in Congress, is best known for helping to create the 1994 “Contract with America” that helped the Republican Party regain control of the House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years.

In addition to being an author of several books that have been on bestseller lists, Gingrich founded a consulting firm and established American Solutions, a think tank based in Washington, D.C.

In 1995, he was named “Man of the Year” by Time magazine.

(In the event of a capacity crowd, the lecture will be broadcast in 209 Lathrop Hall.)
