Kathryn Selfe ’24 has been named a recipient of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP) James C. Gaither Junior Fellowship.
Each year, Carnegie offers approximately 15 one-year fellowships to graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year. Recipients work as full-time research assistants for senior researchers at the Carnegie Endowment — Selfe will serve in the Middle East Program.
A double major in anthropology and Middle Eastern and Islamic studies, Selfe was a peer tutor in Arabic, worked at the Writing and Speaking Center, interned at the Office of the Dean of the College, and studied abroad in Morocco and Australia. Selfe was also a member of the Model Arab League and Arabic coordinator for the Foreign Language Program at Hamilton Elementary School.
Selfe is currently in Meknes, Morocco, as a Boren fellow and a University of Arizona CASA I program fellow. Immersing herself in the culture has “skyrocketed my Arabic proficiency,” Selfe says, enabling her to conduct research, converse confidently, and complete advanced writing projects in Arabic.
This fluency will carry over into Selfe’s work with Carnegie. As a Junior fellow, she will contribute to research projects, write reports, and edit articles on work conducted by senior fellows.
