Moore Named ECAC Coach of the Year; Jon Smyth Earns First Team all-ECAC and Defensive Forward of the Year Honors

ALBANY, N.Y.Several members of the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø men’s ice hockey team were honored Thursday night at the ECAC Awards Banquet in conjunction with the ECAC Championship.

Interim head coach Stan Moore has been named ECAC Coach of the Year after leading the Raiders to a 21-11-5 overall record and the regular season ECAC Championship.  The honor marks the second time in ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = 'urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags' />Moore’s career he has been named Coach of the Year.  Moore took home the honor in 1996-97 as the mentor of Union College.

The ECAC also handed out all-league honors with forward Jon Smyth (Markham, Ont.) being named Best Defensive Forward and first team all-league.  Rookie defender Mike Campaner (Thunder Bay, Ont.) was named to the all-rookie team, while fellow defenseman Rob Brown (Brockville, Ont.) earned second team laurels.  Goaltender Steve Silverthorn (Owen Sound, Ont.) took home honorable mention team honors.?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = 'urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office' />

 

Smyth leads 51³Ô¹ÏÍø with 21 goals and 21 assists for 42 points and has a +21 for the season.  The forward scored the most points in a season as a sophomore since all-American Mike Harder notched 58 points in 1994-95.  He is also among the conference leaders in power play goals with eight and game-winning goals with five.

 

Campaner leads all Raider defenseman with 14 points in ECAC play and a +14.  The freshman is sixth in defenseman scoring in league play and fifth in rookie scoring.  He is currently seventh on team in scoring with 16 points on four goals and 12 points.  Campaner is the first defenseman to be named to the all-rookie team since Rob Brown in 2001.

 

Brown earns second team recognition for the first time in his career.  In 2001 he was named to the all-rookie team and in 2002 he was named honorable mention.  The senior leads all Raider defenseman in scoring with 19 points on three goals and 16 assists.  He is a +8 on the season and has 10 helpers in ECAC play.

 

Silverthorn’s outstanding season is capped with honorable mention recognition.  The junior netminder currently holds a 18-8-4 record with three shutouts.  His 1.82 overall goals against average is fourth in the country and second in the league to only Yann Danis who finished with a 1.81.  Silverthorn’s .926 save percentage is sixth in the nation and second behind Danis in the ECAC, but his winning percentage of .667 is higher than any other goaltender in the league.
