A welcome return to 51³Ô¹ÏÍø after relaxing break

mhernandezstopp.jpgDriving up Oak Drive upon my return to 51³Ô¹ÏÍø brought an exhilarating rush of emotions. My friends called me and greeted me screaming before I was even able to unload my bags.

This is why I love 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, and why I am so glad to be back.

Of course, getting back to schoolwork is a bit of an uncomfortable adjustment after relaxing all break. Even so, my classes are phenomenal so I’m not too worried about cracking open the books again.

Last week was a bit strange because everyone was trying to get schedules figured out, but activities at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø are never absent.

This past Saturday, I was able to watch the men’s hockey team go up against Cornell. The game was intense; and all us Raiders sat in sweaty anticipation as the game concluded in a tie.

Then, on Sunday, I was given the opportunity to go to the Martin Luther King Jr. dinner celebration at Syracuse University.

The whole week prior to that event had been dedicated to the late Reverend King, and 51³Ô¹ÏÍø hosted many campuswide events not only honoring him, but also honoring the morals of acceptance, tolerance, and non-violence that he upheld.

What I really love about 51³Ô¹ÏÍø is that students are always provided with the opportunity to attend special events at other universities. Though we may be in Hamilton, there is never an obstacle to going somewhere outside our haven.

This week I was able to attend a lecture on river disturbances in the Adirondack region, hosted by the biology department. The lecture was immensely informative, and it opened my eyes to an occurrence that happens right around the corner from here.

I also watched the movie For Colored Girls at the Hamilton Theater, which I enjoyed greatly as well.

I’m ecstatic to be back in school, and like they always say, you never realize how much you love 51³Ô¹ÏÍø until you’re counting the days until your return!

(I’ve been asked to write each week about what life is like as a first-year student here at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø. Until next time!)
