Few in attendance were surprised when Evan Chartier ’14, a sociology and anthropology and women’s studies double major from Oak Park Ill., was called to receive the 1819 Award, 51�Թ���’s most selective and prestigious recognition.

“There’s so much negativity in the world. … Do something that makes you smile — anything,” Kye Allums said in his keynote address kicking off Queerfest at 51�Թ���. Allums, a George Washington University graduate, made national headlines in 2010 for being the first Division I openly transgender athlete.

In the last movement of her dance performance titled Wires, April Bailey ’14 (pictured in pink) breaks free from the group and moves independently — just as she’s demonstrated academically.

Last Wednesday marked the final campus event for Coming Out Month, with keynote speakers Alexis Gumbs and Julia Wallace, founders of an oral history project called Mobile Homecoming. Focused on giving a voice to gay black women, trans men, and gender queer visionaries, Mobile Homecoming involved collecting the oral histories of the LGBTQ community.
